The 15th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops on the theme "Young people, faith and vocational discernment" will begin on Wednesday 3 October and end on Sunday 28 October 2018.

The Director of “Aggiornamenti Sociali”, Father Giacomo Costa, was appointed Special Secretary of the XV Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, scheduled for October 2018.

Together with Father Costa, Pope Francis appointed as Special Secretary of the Synod also Don Rossano Sala, Salesian, professor of Pastoral Theology at the Salesian Pontifical University and director of Notes on Youth Pastoral Care.

Born in Genoa in 1967, after graduating in DAMS-Musica at the University of Bologna and serving as a civil servant at the San Marcellin Association for the homeless, Giacomo Costa joined the Society of Jesus in 1992. In addition to his studies in philosophy and theology, he holds a master's degree in Political and Moral Sociology with Luc Boltanski at EHESS (Ecole d' Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales) in Paris, while living and working on the outskirts of the city, in Saint-Denis.

After two years at the Pedro Arrupe Institute of Political Formation in Palermo, since 2005 he has been part of the editorial staff for "Aggiornamenti Sociali", becoming its Director in charge in 2010, succeeding Father Bartolomeo Sorge. He is also President of the San Fedele Cultural Foundation in Milan and Vice President of the Carlo Maria Martini Foundation.

For some months Father Costa has been called by the General Secretariat of the Synod to collaborate in the preparatory phases.

The pope also appointed Brazilian Cardinal Sergio da Rocha as general rapporteur.
