The 31st United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31) will take place in Antalya, Türkiye, from 9 to 21 November 2026, bringing together governments, organisations and civil society representatives to address the global climate crisis. The Society of Jesus will be present through a delegation representing different Jesuit institutions and apostolic works, united by a shared commitment to climate justice and the care of our common home.
Through the Jesuits for Climate Justice campaign, the Social Justice and Ecology Secretariat will provide daily coverage of the conference, sharing reflections, encounters and insights from the Jesuit delegation through an Ignatian perspective. Jesuit communities, institutions and partners in mission are invited to follow and share these contributions, helping amplify the Jesuit voice in the global climate conversation. Among the participating institutions will be the Jesuit European Social Centre (JESC), a work of the Jesuit Conference of European Provincials (JCEP) particularly focused on advocating for those in need around socio-political and ecological issues. JESC will be represented by Filipe Martins, SJ, Director of JESC and Secretary for Social Justice and Ecology at JCEP, and Emmanuelle Huet, Ecology Officer at JESC.
The Society of Jesus will take part in the global climate conversation at the 31st United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP31), taking place in Antalya, Türkiye, from 9 to 21 November 2026. Through the Jesuits for Climate Justice campaign, the Society aims to bring an Ignatian perspective to the discussions, highlighting the experiences, encounters and reflections of its delegation throughout the conference.
COP31 provides an important opportunity for governments, international organisations, civil society and other stakeholders to address the climate crisis and advance international cooperation on climate action. For the Society of Jesus, engagement in this process is closely connected to its commitment to social justice, ecological responsibility and the care of our common home.
An Ignatian perspective on climate justice
For the Society of Jesus, climate change is not simply an environmental issue; it is also a question of social justice, human dignity and solidarity with the most vulnerable. Inspired by the Universal Apostolic Preferences and the commitment to reconciliation with Creation, Jesuits and their collaborators seek to contribute to a world in which ecological responsibility and care for people go hand in hand.
The Jesuit delegation to COP31 brings together members of different institutions and apostolic works from across the Society of Jesus:
Daniela Alba – Social Justice and Ecology Secretariat
Emmanuelle Huet – Jesuit European Social Centre (JESC)
Rowena Soriaga – Environmental Science for Social Change
Michael Fendel – Jesuit Social Services
Filipe Martins, SJ – Jesuit European Social Centre (JESC)
Jebamalai Irudayaraj, SJ – Social Justice and Ecology Secretariat
Among them, the Jesuit European Social Centre (JESC), a work of the Jesuit Conference of European Provincials (JCEP), will be represented by Filipe Martins, SJ, Director of JESC and Secretary for Social Justice and Ecology at JCEP, and Emmanuelle Huet, Ecology Officer at JESC.
Following the Jesuit delegation
Throughout COP31, the Jesuits for Climate Justice campaign will publish daily communications capturing meaningful encounters, reflections and developments observed by the delegation. Through articles, photographs and other communications, the campaign will seek to make the experiences of those present accessible to the wider Jesuit network and its partners.
The aim is not simply to report on the conference proceedings, but to share how the Jesuit commitment to climate justice is expressed through encounters, dialogue and engagement with the global community. Each contribution will be shaped by an Ignatian perspective, highlighting the connections between ecological conversion, social justice, solidarity and the care of our common home.
An invitation to the Jesuit network
Jesuits, Jesuit institutions, partners in mission and communications coordinators across the Society are invited to support the campaign by sharing its coverage through their own communication channels and networks. By doing so, they can help amplify the voices and experiences of the delegation and extend the reach of the Jesuit contribution to the global climate conversation.
