On 25 February, the Jesuit school Nuestra Señora del Recuerdo (Madrid) celebrated the 25th Anniversary of the school Social Service, a project for all the students and families.
The Social Service is developed during the school year and the students dedicate one hour a week as social volunteer in educational reinforcement with minors, elderly or disabled people, hospitals, homeless. The students always come accompanied by volunteer mothers, who guide and support the young people in their social intervention.
More than 6,100 former students, 350 volunteer mothers and 42 organizations have been part of this Social Service. In 1992 the director of the center, Fr Agustín Alonso imported the model he met in schools in the USA and Latin America, bringing students in contact with realities of social exclusion.
For the Jesuit director, Fr Antonio España: "It is a great joy to have been all these years working to give this compassionate look towards the society. Jesuit education seeks an integral formation and this social element provides a more realistic and more Christian view of the world. Education is a way of changing the world, and the deeper, more believable and more realistic, the more we can change to improve it". Thus, as the head of the school pastoral Fr Benigno Álvarez said, -the union of all these people and realities leads us to recognize the face of Jesus-.
