“A deeper faith, a more humane life” reads the souvenir pen given to the first 500 celebrating 25 years since Vilnius University’s St. John’s church worships once more after desecration as a paper warehouse and later a museum of science during Soviet occupation. Jesuits served from 1570 to the suppression, prior to and during World War II, and since 1991. The first rector (now bishop) Jonas Boruta SJ presided at Mass, followed by lunch of Jesuit soup (from Jesuit Soups by Richard Curry SJ) and home-made sweets at the ministry fair. On the previous day Dr. Liudas Jovaiša had traced St. John’s history as the first parish church in Lithuania (1387) through the centuries, noting the priorities of Jesuit education, the role of Sodalities, charitable fraternities and its influence on culture. The chancellor of the University, Dr. Aleksas Pikturna, greeted the assembly, as did university chaplain Vidmantas Šimkūnas SJ. Tours of the church were lightened with tea and cookies.
