Fr. Arturo Sosa, General Superior of the Society of Jesus and Fr. Franck Janin, President of the Conference of European Provincials have opened on September 22 the Assembly of the Conference of European Provincials at the St. Ignatius Retreat House of Sarrià in the north of Barcelona.

On Sunday September 23rd the entire group got the occasion to a guided visit of the Sagrada Familia and to concelebrate with Fr. General in the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament.

There are two main themes at the meeting. First, the Apostolic Preferences of the Society of Jesus at the global level. This work is being realised at all levels of the Society to make clear which are the themes that have to mark the guidelines of the coming years.

In his address at the General Assembly Fr. General stressed how important this discernment process is taken by himself and his assistants, and how the final result will be presented to Pope Francis. Fr. Sosa described the Jesuit Conferences of Provincials as “the place for discernment”. This correspondents with the way this General Assembly is going on, a process where every theme is presented, meditated personally and discussed.

The second topic is the reality of the Jesuit Formation Centres in Europe, to foster the cooperation between them.

In the final Eucharist, Fr. Franck Janin, president of the Conference, concelebrated with his socius Fr. José de Pablo and with Fr. Victor Assouad, assistant of Fr. General for Western Europe. It seemed that exactly on this day Fr. Assouad was celebrating 25 years of priesthood.

Fr. Janin explained the importance of the name "Conference" with which this group of Mayor Superiors of a Continent is called. It comes from latin: con-ferre - to carry together. And he added how grateful he was about this reality: the Jesuit Conference as a place where we carry together our Mission.
