Jorge Huete, vice-rector of the UCA in Nicaragua asked for international Support in a press conference in Bilbao. He asked “world support to make the government resign for free and transparent elections”

The deplorable government-supported repression and violence in Nicaragua has claimed more than 350 lives in less than three months.

All attempts to silence or vilify the University of Central America (UCA) Rector, Fr. José Alberto Idiáquez, S.J., in his firm defense of the lives of Nicaragua´s students, represent an explicit abandonment of the ideals of democracy.

Huete has related in this meeting in Arrupe Etxea (Bilbao) that "an irregular army of hooded people has sown terror in the population. The government's strategy goes through the elimination of the leaders of the popular insurrection." The Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy, nevertheless, insists on the peaceful way to demand the resignation of the government. "While the people have done everything they can by peaceful means, it seems that the Government wants the people to seek an armed solution. We need international support to pressure and persuade the government to resign and, in the process, a civic solution that eventually leads to free and transparent elections."

Mª Mar Magallón, manager of the Jesuit NGO ALBOAN expressed on behalf of the entities of the Jesuit social sector the "most absolute condemnation of repression, our solidarity with victims and families, and our support for the university community of the UCA."

In addition, she has called on the Government of Spain and the International Community and its multilateral organizations, particularly the Organization of American States, to demand and support the democratization of the country.
