May 11-14th. Fr. Arturo Sosa SJ, made his first visit to the Province of Spain. Fr. Sosa has been in Madrid and Valladolid, where he met with Jesuits, lay people and staff of the Jesuit schools.

During his visit, Fr General met with the Cardinal Archbishops of Madrid and Valladolid, Carlos Osoro and Ricardo Blázquez, and the Bishop of Alcalá de Henares, Juan Antonio Reig.

Fr. Sosa confirmed that his government will follow the statements of GC36: promoting reconciliation with others, with God and with Creation. And he has pointed out as challenges for the Province of Spain the spiritual and intellectual depth and to enhance the theological reflection that the Pope has asked the Jesuits.

Father General talked about how to set in motion the challenges of GC36. These challenges need a common discernment relating to the apostolic planning; the collaboration with others; more communication as an Ignatian heritage and networking, as an ordinary way of action. He also insisted on the need for an ecological conversion and urged the Jesuits to help for culture transformation from education, promoting interculturality.

Regarding the great challenges of the Church and of the Society of Jesus, Fr. Sosa highlighted three. The first, embodying Vatican II so that the church becomes the people of God, a lay church, community of communities, open to the Holy Spirit and able to discern. The second challenge is how the church focuses more on the power of the signs than on the signs of power (looking at the example of Pope Francis). The third challenge is the formation of universal citizens in an intercultural world.

Fr. General will return to the Province on July to attend the international meeting of Jesuit universities in Deusto. In September he will come back, this time to Manresa, for the meeting of the European provincials.
