On May 11-14, 2018, Arrupe Center (Warsaw) and the Commission for Education and Formation of the Greek Catholic Church organized two conferences for teachers in the East of Ukraine entitled "A new model of school in Ukraine".

At the beginning of the conference in Kramatorsk, Donetsk region, young people greeted us with poems by Shevchenko recited in Polish and with Polish dances. In the morning of May 11th, Wojciech Żmudziński SJ gave a speech encouraging teachers to take care of their personal development and to shape the climate and culture of the school in which they teach. Father Johan Lubiv, the director of the St. Sophie school in Lviv, spoke about the values and the need to develop the mature personality of the teacher. After the break, Katarzyna Stryjek gave very practical advice to teachers on how to deal with school conflicts.

The participants of the conference in Kramatorsk listened to the sisters of Cristophora (responsible for Catholic schools in Ukraine), who talked about new teaching methods focusing on the student portfolio, and Alexei Zarytsky, who interested everyone by deepening the subject of the teacher's personal development. After the warm meal, work began in four groups, whose representatives presented on the forum the most important points of discussion and proposals for changes in education postulated by the teachers participating in the discussion.

The second conference was held in Lisiczansk (Lugansk region), close to the front where battles against separatists are still taking place. Some teachers have come a long way to participate. Also during this conference we talked about the important role of positive relations and Christian values in the upbringing of young people, about the maturity of teachers and their social competences.

About a hundred people took part in both forums about the new model of school and they were subsidized by the Bishops of the USA as part of a project carried out by the Association of Christian Educational Works.
