Madrid, 13th March 2018.- Saint Louis University commemorated its 50 year anniversary at a landmark event, which brought together hundreds of members of the University's past and present as well as many prominent figures from the Church, politics, education and business. The Madrid campus was founded in 1967, when the Father Raymond L. Sullivant, S.J. established a humble study abroad program, which grew and developed into an independent, permanent university campus.

The anniversary celebration began a Mass in the Church of San Francisco de Borja of Madrid, the main church of the Society of Jesus in Spain. Archbishop of the Diocese of Madrid Cardinal Carlos Osoro presided over the Mass. Then, in a ceremony in the Auditorium of the Colegio Nuestra Señora del Buen Consejo, the University awarded the Degree of Doctor honoris causa to three distinguished Spaniards: Father Enrique Figaredo Alvargonzales, the “Bishop of the Wheel Chairs”; Isabel Gómez-Acebo Duque de Estrada, Theologian and founder of the Spanish Theologian Women Association (ATE); and José María Merino, Spanish writer and Member of the Real Academia Española.

The three recipients of the Doctor honoris causa from Saint Louis University

“I would like to say how fortunate I feel to have been associated with such an outstanding centre that educates excellent professionals and accomplished leaders, instills humane values to their students, teaches them to be happy… and even grants me an honorary doctorate,” highlighted Isabel Gómez-Acebo during her speech.

José María Merino declared, “This doctor honoris causa from the venerable Saint Louis University, fills me with pride, affection and gratitude”.

Finally, “Father Kike” claimed that “Jesuit education teaches us to live together with ‘different animals,’ leading with gentleness. We cannot live without relating to one another, no matter how different we are. The awareness that the other is a surprise and enriches us, is to live and be open to real learning.”
