Gaudete Sunday, December 17, was a big day for the small but enthusiastic local Church of Kyrgyzstan. In the simple Catholic cathedral of Bishkek, Father Anthony James Corcoran, S.J., (CSU+RUS) was installed as apostolic administrator. In the presence of parishioners from different areas of the country, Bishop José Luis Mumbiela of Almaty, Kazakhstan, representing the papal nuncio, presided at the liturgy and received Fr. Corcoran’s profession of faith and oath, and read the papal decree of appointment. Bishop Joseph Werth, S.J., of Novosibirsk, Russia, gave the homily. Other bishops from Kazakhstan as well as the bishop of Uzbekistan concelebrated, as did the Jesuits working in the country along with other guests. Father Corcoran served as regional superior of the Russian Region from January 2009 until February 2017. Prior to that he was the vicar general in Novosibirsk, Russia. Born in Arizona and raised in Texas, he has worked in the Russian Region since 1997. Parallel to his work as vicar general, at different times he was rector and spiritual father in the Novosibirsk pre-seminary program.
