The JCEP Consult took place on February 19th and 20th in Seville, hosted by the Jesuit Community in Portaceli. Dalibor Renić, President of the JCEP, chaired the meeting, which included Miguel Almeida, Provincial of Portugal; Marc Desmet, Regional Superior of the Low Countries; Gonzalo Villagrán, JCEP Socius; and, for the first time, the new consultor Attila András, Provincial of Hungary. The consultors also enjoyed the opportunity to experience this beautiful, sunny city, rich in history and tradition.
Following a period of personal sharing and updates from the JCEP and each assistancy, the Consult addressed several current issues facing the Conference. These included preparations for MAGIS Korea 2027 and the adaptation to new roles required by the Society of Jesus for Conference Formation Delegates. A preliminary evaluation was conducted regarding the JCEP Tertianship program based in Bikfaya, Lebanon, with the online participation of Michael Zammit, Provincial of the Near East; Dany Younès, Tertian Instructor; and János Lukács, JCEP Formation Delegate. This evaluation was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the significant value of hosting a Tertianship program in a frontier region, situated among Eastern Christian communities and within the context of dialogue with Islam. Finally, considerable time was dedicated to finalizing the organization of the JCEP General Assembly, to be held in Warsaw this coming April.
In the days preceding the Consult, the JCEP President, accompanied by the Socius, visited several Jesuit apostolic works in the city. They first visited Universidad Loyola, a Jesuit university founded in 2011 as the successor to a school of economics that had existed in Córdoba since 1963. During the visit, the JCEP President held an extensive meeting with the Rector, Mr. Fabio Gómez-Estern, and the Communications Director, Javier López de Pablo. This provided an opportunity to gain deeper insight into the university's current status and future horizons, while reflecting together on the intellectual apostolate in Europe and the development of Jesuit higher education networking within the Conference. Separately, the JCEP President also met with Mr. Carlos Losada, President of the Universidad Loyola Board of Trustees.
The JCEP President also visited Portaceli Jesuit School, the Society's primary educational institution in the city, founded in 1905 and established at its current site in 1950. The President and Socius toured the school and met with the Director, Mrs. Marga Correa, and other members of the leadership team.
The Consult itself was held in the brand-new building of the Arrupe Center, Seville’s Jesuit centre for faith and culture. Founded at its present location in 1991, the centre has become an apostolic hub where the primary pastoral, cultural, and social initiatives of the Jesuit milieu in Seville converge.
The visit proved to be a fruitful time for communal conversation and discernment to advance the mission of the JCEP. It offered a discovery of a vibrant, well-rooted Jesuit presence and a chance to appreciate the artistic and historical beauty of this southern European city.
