Debating Europe in Research Seminar for Peace Zaragoza.
The current situation in Europe has been debated this month in Jesuit forums in Spain. The major challenges for European citizens; the crisis of democracy or the democratic deficit of the political dimension of Europe today, the growing nationalism (not only Brexit) were analyzed at the Forum Larramendi San Sebastian.
At the conference "The big issues about this Europe", professor of the Carlos III University, Isabel Wences, talked about the Islamophobic flow that feeds the awakening of populisms and lead to closing borders. All this with the vote of people discontented of belonging to Europe. She also spoke of the shameful lack of solidarity of the refugee crisis and stressed the questions of climate change and the social problems inherent in it.
Furthermore, the Research Seminar for Peace in Zaragoza dedicates its central project of 2017 to analyse the threats of polarization, radicalization and intolerance that endanger a peaceful coexistence. The project analyses its causes, risks and possible therapies at all scales: Europe, Spain, United States and Russia, Religions and cultures. The first weekend was dedicated to the European Union, with two serious problems: the rise of nationalisms and xenophobic movements, and the refugee crisis. 160 people attended and a group of 25 experts followed the discussion.
