Minya is a governorate in Upper Egypt, located about 268 kilometers from Cairo, its capital city. The Jesuit mission has a long history in Minya, dating back over 130 years. The group of Jesuit fathers in this region is known as the Community of Saint Mark, and their monastery church is named after Saint Mark.
The Jesuit monastic order is a missionary group, and its monks strive to live out their message wherever they are, adapting to the needs of their current surroundings. They are always prepared to move to different locations to serve God's message. This year, the Community of Saint Mark in Minya witnessed several members moving to new roles. Father Majed William took over as the head of the Jesuit Fathers Monastery, Father Joseph Fawzi Attia became the director of the Jesuit Fathers School, Father Magdy Seif moved to the Holy Family Community in Cairo, Father Ihab Samir to the Novice Monastery, and Father Amir Adel to the Public School in Lebanon.
The academic year started on October 1st, following the summer break, with new students joining the school and existing students continuing their educational journey at the Jesuit Fathers School. The school offers primary and preparatory education, as well as a kindergarten section. Education is highly valued in the monastic mission, and the school places great emphasis on the educational development of its students, alongside their academic growth.
The Jesuit order's mission in Minya extends beyond the school. It includes the Jesuit and Frere Development Association, the Gad El-Sayed Center, and the Jesuit Educational Center for Youth Services (YES). The YES center offers various activities, such as scouting and theater. For instance, in cooperation with the Swiss Marlam Theater, a virtual reality concert titled "Clash...Digital Resurrection" was hosted on October 20 and 21, featuring 3D VR glasses and virtual models of a pre-prepared show.
On October 7, 2023, a special evening celebration took place at the Jesuit Theater, marking the launch of the "Jezwit Cultural Forum." This forum represents an extension of the cultural work in Minya and pays tribute to the Jesuit heritage in the region. Notably, Brother Fayez Saad, who left his unique mark in this field, was remembered on the 18th anniversary of his passing. The Jesuit Cultural Forum aims to provide safe spaces for coexistence, encourage freedom of thought and expression without judgment, foster critical thinking skills, and promote knowledge with a clear vision. It seeks to spread thought, culture, and art within society through enlightened individuals.
