After a meeting hold at St. Xavier’s School, Jawalekhel, last Saturday (02/05/2015) by the Jesuits involved in the Relief and Rehabilitation work in Nepal because of the earthquake, Fr. Boniface Tigga SJ, Regional Superior in Nepal reported that:

“…we the Jesuits with our collaborators and co-workers and volunteers branched out to different districts and villages to respond to the situation. Two major areas of responses are undertaken now: a) Providing food materials to the extent possible; b) providing temporary shelter with the material available and we have ordered for more tarpaulin for distribution. Each of the Jesuit institution has taken up different places and is responding well. Our focus has been where the government help has not reached so far, that is, reaching the unreached”.

Then Fr. Boniface describes the coordination taken place at various levels.

  1. Coordination among the Jesuits and their teams: There is a Core Committee under the leadership of the Nepal Regional Superior to undertake the response properly and timely. DilipToppo who is the CSA of the region is the Coordinator of this CC. The other members are Boniface Tigga, Bill Robins, Prakash Louis, Augustine Amakkatt, Jiju Kevilill, Amrit Rai, Jomon Jose, Greg Sharkey, David Ekka, Mathew Assarikudy, S.Arulanandam,Vijay Toppo, and Boby Joseph.
  2. Individual Jesuits and institutions have taken up various responsibilities and are carrying them out well. Jomon Jose is in charge of information desk; scholastic Augustus Ekka is in charge of the stocks and supplies; the Regional Superiors Office is the Central Office from where coordination is done. Efforts are being made to identify and recruit lay staff. In a few days’ time, the team would appoint a lay person as an Assistant Coordinator who would also liaison with the government, civil society of Nepal, and other stakeholders.
  3. Coordination with Church Agencies: The Jesuit team has been meeting Caritas Nepal. In the coming days efforts would be made to establish coordination with Caritas Nepal, Caritas India, Caritas Germany and other Caritas’s involved in this R&R work. Similar efforts would be done with CRS. There is also an attempt to network with Conference of Religious Nepal (CRN).
  4. Coordination with NGOs and INGOs: Efforts would be made to network with NGOs and INGOs in the coming days to ensure no duplication and greater synergy.
  5. Coordination with Nepal Emergency Desk: After Sunday’s meeting, the Nepal Jesuits’ Earthquake Relief & Rehabilitation Response Team (NJERRRT) will communicate to POSA, JCSA Office and Earthquake Response Team Delhi at ISI Delhi and through them to all the Jesuit companions and other supporters, the emerging scenario, the villages identified by us, the type of responses we are capable of providing, requests for volunteers and finance and other forms of support.

There is an ongoing support from the Xavier Network, the European Jesuit Mission Offices and NGOs. The Xavier Network has already made available 50.000,00 Euros for urgent relief to the Jesuit Region in Nepal.  Several members of the Xavier Network have opened special bank accounts in order to collect funds that will be put at the service of the relief work of our Jesuit companions in Nepal.
