“To foster a culture of vocation promotion”, i.e., to create among Jesuits and lay partners alike, a widespread sense of responsibility for the promotion of the Jesuit vocation in Europe and to make of both Jesuit communities and Jesuit works spaces where the testimony of the Jesuit way of life is clear and where inquirers may be welcomed and find accompaniment and support as they search their way in life. The first call of the JCEP Apostolic Plan states these objectives and asks, concretely, for a common meeting of Provincials and Vocation Promoters of each one of the Provinces/Region of the Conference.

The meeting took place, online, on September 15th, with the goal of listening to each other, sharing perceptions and experiences, in order to create a greater common engagement of all in this work. A questionnaire, sent previously, gathered responses to the questions: how satisfied am I with the promotion being done in my Province/Region? What is the greatest challenge for Vocation Promotion? What would be the realistic next step in my Province/Region to make grow a culture of Vocation Promotion? It was interesting to compare the views of the Major Superiors with those of the Promoters. The latter were also asked to share their greatest struggle or frustration and their greatest consolation in their mission as Promoters.

Brief testimonies by two Provincials and two Promoters completed the introduction to a time of dialogue in small groups and plenary. Many things came up in the conversations, from difficult challenges to encouragingly fruitful experiences. The intuition for the meeting proved correct: as some curious differences of perspective surfaced, both groups profited from listening to each other; and there was mutual encouragement and confirmation of the importance of continued dialogue between Major Superiors and Vocation Promoters to move forward this not so easy mission.
