In the Service of European Christians.

There is a small Ecumenical Chapel in the heart of the European Quarter in Brussels, just between the European Parliament, Commission and Council. The Chapel serves those involved in the European institutions and is used to “mix” people from different cultures and confessions. It is a place of worship but also of discussion and exchange on European topics from the Christian perspective.

The Chapel is often busy, but the evening of 28th September was exceptionally crowded.

Celebrating its 15th anniversary, we enjoyed once again the Chapel as a place of prayer, encounter and community. The Ecumenical prayer was celebrated by the Archbishop of Brussels, Jozef de Kesel, together with the representatives of the Orthodox, Protestant and Anglican Churches, and other friends of the Chapel. In his homily the Archbishop reflected on the role of European Christians:
“(...) Here, at the heart of society, at the heart of Europe, lies our calling. It is here that the Lord is asking us to be salt and light. This does not mean imposing ourselves, but our demonstrating solidarity with the great challenges which Europe is having to deal with. We do not feel superior to others. We want to remain gentle and humble at heart, artisans of peace, fighting for justice and mercy. That is, to be the salt of the earth and the light of Europe”.
