The Jubilee Committee of the European Low Countries Region (ELC) would like to include you in the preparations for the Ignatius Jubilee Year which runs from 20 May 2021 to 31 July 2022. I9n the course of this year, among other activities, we will present a Theatre monologue on the life of Saint Ignatius.
The text of The Ignatius Monologue has been written by Dries van den Akker SJ. Ignatius tells us his life story, laced with (funny) anecdotes.
We approached the actor Kurt Defrancq to take on the role of Ignatius.
The premiere will take place on 6 February 2022 in the Old Abbey in Drongen. Until the end of March 2022 the actor will go on tour in Flanders and the Netherlands and perform in theatres, cultural centres, churches, the Ignatian schools.
The main theme of the monologue is Ignatius' adaptability - everything always turns out differently from what he initially expected. This ability to adapt eventually led to the foundation of the Society of Jesus or the Jesuit Order.
Ignatius presents his life story in a contemporary way:
His dreams about noble women: “Winning duels and tournaments for the woman of my dreams. Yes, I too had a woman of my dreams. A very high-ranking lady… Can I leave it at that?”
The Battle of Pamplona: “My fellow fighters told us to give up. The supremacy of the French was far too great. Give up? Never! If you fight for the King, you don't give up. Knight’s Honour!”
The slow recovery from his wounds: “As things were progressing now, I would never be able to walk normally again. Unthinkable!!! There was no other option than to break the bones again and put them together in a better way. A massacre. But I didn't budge. Only my clenched fists could tell you how much it hurt.”
The text of the monologue has already been translated in English, stage directions are included. You can get is for free. If you are interested, let me know: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
Educational material is being developed for the schools.
