Created in 2016, under the direction of choir director Louis Lorieux S.J., Diony's Voice brings together 50 young choir members who sing negro spirituals, gospel and songs of African inspiration. For its third anniversary, the gospel choir of Saint-Denis (France) has launched a new challenge with the recording of a CD.

Diony's Voice was born in 2016 after taking the time to live and discover the richness of the city of Saint-Denis. I have had various opportunities to meet young adults, especially through Scouts. Their taste for music and catchy rhythms, their ability to dance and express their joy, their desire to live common experiences were all signs that pushed me to start a gospel group with them, even though I had already had a gospel experience before. And the enthusiasm was there: from the first rehearsal, there were 20 of them and their loyalty was not denied.

Music then becomes a place to gather and live a strong human experience together. You have to tame your voice, learn to breathe and sing right, listen more widely, discover your own timbre to put it at the service of the group, adjust to each other... But the experience is not only personal, it is also community. The group has united as rehearsals, concerts, games, impromptu encounters... This joy experienced is that of the Negro Spirituals. It is anchored in a reality of life that is not always simple. Negro Spirituals were born in the heart of slavery as songs of hope and liberation. At the heart of the difficulties of life that sometimes overwhelm us, in Saint-Denis at least as much as elsewhere, hope is discreetly finding its way. Beyond the experiences of nonsense, singing reveals to us the beauty of the world and the beauty of man! This beauty raises man up and gives him to move forward, with others, on his own path."

Music Album A Gospel Story: Diony's Voice's new project

After three years of activity, the choir has embarked on a new challenge: the recording of an album. "We thought it was time to tell all this in music with "A Gospel Story", a CD to meet the demand of our audience, to record the progression of the choir in a creation that resembles it. But also to live a new collective adventure and to pay tribute to the city of Saint-Denis," says Cédric Lecordier, Jesuit, percussionist and vice-president of the Diony's Voice association.

To finance this project, the choir used participatory funding that far exceeded the initial objective.

With more than thirty concerts in Saint-Denis and the Paris region, as well as at the Saint-Ignace church in Paris, the choir wants to bear witness to the history of the meeting of an audience of all horizons: in retirement homes, with refugees through the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS France), in neighbourhood homes....
