With a talk at the University of Deusto (Bilbao) in which the Bishop of Bilbao, Mario Iceta, and the Dean of the Faculty of Theology, Francisco José Ruiz Pérez SJ, took part, on October 3, the initiative Eliza Sarean, a space for reflection, dialogue, formation and spreading about the way of being a church on the net, which is born from the collaboration between the University of Deusto and the movement General Catholic Action of Bizkaia (Basque Country, Spain).

The initiative responds to the current challenges of the digital society and the need to create new ecclesial presences with different languages. It’s a question of increasing the ecclesial presence in the networks and to give answer to the demand of new ways of ecclesial collaboration. In this sense, this space is addressed to ecclesial animators, ecclesial movements and educators, among others. At the University of Deusto there will be spaces for meeting and dialogue to deal with topics such as the presence of the Church on the net or the use of social networks to evangelize, as well as a seminar on the new religious language in the digital society. Eliza Sarean has also opened an Instagram account: @elizasarean.

In the first talk, Néstor Artola, a militant of General Catholic Action (EKO-ACG), promoter of the initiative, offered comparative data of the last years of Internet and networks, as well as the profile of users, reviewed the teaching of the popes from Paul VI to Francis, in their references to the role of communication and explained their commitment to "a personal presence in the networks, more personal than institutional", as well as the importance of giving a witness of authentically Christian life. "Evangelizing," said Artola, "is not apology”.

Bishop Iceta closed the session by mentioning the Extraordinary Missionary Month "to bear witness, to share life and to be missionaries on the Net. He also said that we can be called to mission in this digital continent" and he spoke of "announcing, evangelizing, being and generating encounter" and also of knowing how to distinguish "between grain and straw" among so many contents.
