From Thursday, September 5, until Saturday evening, September 7 there was an interesting meeting of Jesuits in Loyola to reflect on the pastoral ministry of vocations. 40 fellow Jesuits from different sectors - quite a few of them working in youth ministry - joined. The objective was to share intuitions, concerns and listen to each other to try to see what we can and should do to accompany vocational processes in the Society of Jesus.

The dynamic was alternating moments of reflection, time for groups and dialogue in assembly. Starting from a first brainstorming on strong and weak points, the work of the groups focused on four basic questions: 1) How can the Ignatian be vocationally significant? 2) Which religious explanation is necessary and possible? 3) Which image of Christ do we live and transmit and 4) Which Jesuit way of life is vocationally meaningful and possible? The sharing of each of these themes was an occasion for interesting and intense dialogues throughout the two days.

Ignatian pedagogy

A second block of questions was raised by Gabino Uríbarri SJ when he invited the group to reflect on their own vocational authenticity, the need to bring into play an Ignatian pedagogy with all its possibilities; the importance of audacity and parresia (which we could translate as freedom to speak openly) to announce and evangelize, and the importance of an anthropological basis for vocation, in which one sees that vocation is good news.

Along with the reflection, we had moments of prayer, personal and shared. To put Jesus in the center. Also on Friday night in the basilica we had a prayer vigil led by the novitiate community, who came to Loyola to share various moments of the meeting. The Friday and Saturday Eucharist in the conversion chapel helped us to place this personal and community life in God's hands.

This meeting was not intended to be a "laboratory" for finding solutions or recipes, but a space for meeting and dialogue, which can be part of a greater dialogue and sustained over time, of which we are called to participate in different communities.
