A personal testimony.
Isabel Mariz is a university student from Portugal. She served as volunteer in program hold at one of the poorest villages in Europe Rabo de Peixe at Azores. Here is her testimony.
"Rabo de Peixe" in a word: catchy!!!! A village of San Miguel that causes mixed emotions. A poor place but contagious. First the poverty but on the other side the smile and the joy of children who give us a great peace. I accepted this adventure without knowing very well what was going to happen. Even we think we are prepared for those stories and experiences, we never imagine the other "world" we have so near to us. And the truth is that it is hard but pays off! In fact we leave our home confort and learn to trust. Trust in those kids with different realitites. We must be prepared to transform and not imposing anything. Just let ourselves to be captivated by them and for their smiles. At the end, the important is the laughts, the songs, the jumps, the shares. The important is the memory of those who have so much to give us. I have been volunteering ever since. It builds character, self-esteem and is a terrific learning experience. Volunteers are a vital part of all communities. It's not only an important learning experience but a special way to lend a helping hand and more importantly your heart! It's: live, share and inspire.
