On Wednesday April 17, the Spiritual Center of Penboc'h, in Morbihan, inaugurated its coastal wall and its sailor's shelter, completely restored after 15 months of work.

Almost a year after the launch of the collection of donations for the restoration of the coastal wall and the sailor's shelter of the Jesuit Spiritual Center of Penboc'h in Morbihan, the work is now completed.

After the restoration of the Saint-Joseph chapel in 2015, then of all the buildings in 2018-2020, the Penboc'h Center launched, at the end of 2022, the restoration of the wall and the sailor's shelter located opposite the littoral .

A beautiful outpouring of generosity

The Center has therefore appealed to everyone's generosity for this restoration project worth more than €800,000 through the launch of a call for donations campaign in partnership, as for the previous phases of renovation, with the Fondation du Heritage.
The restoration project was supported by a great outpouring of generosity. Nearly 1,000 donors participated in this collection, both for the restoration of the wall and its slates and for the repairs to the damage caused by storm Ciaran in November 2023.On April 17, 2024, the inauguration of the renovated wall and shelter took place in Penboc'h in the presence of Father Arnaud de Rolland sj, Provincial Delegate for Jesuit Spiritual Centers, and Mr. Hubert Brichart, President of the board of directors of the Penboc'h Center, Mr. Patrick Sicard, Director of the Center, Mr. Jacques Augustin and Mr. Dominique de Ponsay, territorial delegate and departmental delegate of the Heritage Foundation.

Preserve a unique element of local heritage

Started in December 2022, the work focused on the consolidation, drainage and complete repair of the wall and the sailor's shelter, the first objective was to be able to ensure the safety of walkers, many of whom use this coastal path.
The work also aimed to safeguard a unique element of local heritage and the history of the region : the wall is in fact covered with slates engraved by generations of students from the Saint François-Xavier high school in Vannes who left their mark, over the past century, their name, coat of arms or personal words. The stones constituting the wall and the shelter were very damaged due to bad weather and waves from the Gulf of Morbihan.

Following Storm Ciaran, restoration work continues

On the night of November 1 to 2, 2023, storm Ciaran caused significant damage to the center's wooded park and one of the Center's three buildings suffered significant damage. A stone cross on the roof of the chapel was torn off by the wind, damaging the slates as it fell. The cast iron statue of the Virgin and Child was swept by the wind and fell from its base. The surrounding wall, then being restored, also suffered: slates were loosened by the gusts. Several months will be necessary to restore the roofs and the park.
This is why the call for donations previously launched for the restoration of the coastal wall and the sailor's shelter continues . This call for donations will allow the spiritual center, following the restoration of the wall and the shelter, to repair the buildings and recreate this exceptional natural space, appreciated by the retreatants and helping to give a soul to this place of healing exceptional.
