The Jesuit Thought and Tradition in Early Modernity Research Group (PEMOSJ), as a research group within The Renaissance Society of America, organised a meeting at the Seville campus of Loyola University on 12 and 13 May 2022. The meeting brought together scholars and researchers from all over the world to analyse the ethics and cosmopolitan justice of Jesuit thought and tradition in the Iberian School of Peace and Ibero-American Scholasticism and their relationship with the social, cultural, political, economic and environmental development of this philosophy from the 16th and 17th centuries to the present day.
The meeting was opened by Carlos García Alonso, Vice-Rector for Research at Loyola University, who welcomed the attendees. The inaugural lecture was given by Pedro Calafate, professor at the University of Lisbon, on the ethical foundations of the Iberian School of Peace, with a special focus on the contribution of Jesuit thinkers.
This was followed by six consecutive round table discussions over the two days, which brought together anthropology, philosophy and experts, not only with a historical perspective, but also with the aim of shedding light, as indicated by Challenge 6, challenges of society, to establish reflections that contribute to current philosophy and offer perspectives on the current problems of society. They included, among others, reflections on the thoughts of Francisco Suárez SJ, the discourse of Juan de Mariana SJ on the tyranny of the new world, the figure of José de Acosta SJ and the critique of injustices, and the archives of Diego de Torres SJ and his ethical foundations of the first reductions.
