In the Diocesan Delegation for Migration (Nador, Morocco), our work with migrants has led us to understand more and more the importance of connecting the different points of the migratory route (countries of origin, transit and destination).
This led to the creation of the "West African Migratory Route" project, which focuses on the places of origin of forcibly displaced persons.
Guinea hosted the first phase starting in 2019. The intervention in that country allowed us to establish agreements with local and international organisations, as well as to make a diagnosis of the level of information of the Guinean population on the migratory context in Morocco and in Europe. Participatory awareness-raising sessions were held in several cities and in early 2020 a citizens' platform was set up, bringing together institutions such as Caritas Guinea and the Red Cross.
Despite the difficulties created by the pandemic and the inevitable readjustments, the project in Guinea is obtaining very favourable results, which has led the DDM to plan a similar initiative in another country in the same region: Senegal. This new phase began at the end of 2020, with the deployment of two members of the team, who are already working with some local entities.
The main objective, in both countries, is to reduce the risks linked to irregular migration through awareness-raising, information and community development actions carried out in various cities. In Senegal, we will also try to create a platform with civil society institutions, Caritas Senegal, Red Cross and Red Crescent. A tool that we also want to implement is the RefAid application (already active in Morocco and Spain), which offers free and up-to-date information on aid organisations and resources available to the migrant human family.
All of this responds to the desire that has always inspired the work of the DDM, of which the Jesus Society is a part: to do everything in our power to protect people in transit, especially the most vulnerable, along the entire migration route. It is a desire that we can only realise thanks to the help of our funders, and for this reason we are very grateful to the SJ Mission Secretariat and Manos Unidas NGO for their fundamental contribution to this project in the country of origin.
